Round 8 preview: Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar

Sydney FC head into Round 8 on top of the Westfield W-League table, but the surging Brisbane Roar are eager to take a swipe at the table-toppers when the two sides meet at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Sky Blues are flying after a 4-0 rout of Canberra United in Round 7. Remy Siemsen, Cortnee Vine and Princess Ibini-Isei have clicked into gear in the final third while midfield general Teresa Polias has turned in terrific performances game after game as the Sydney surged to six wins from six games.

But Brisbane Roar are beginning to build momentum of their own. The Roar are the only other Westfield W-League side to have gone undefeated to date, notching four draws to start the season before going on a three-game winning run leading into their clash with Sydney.

Emily Gielnik scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season in a 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers earlier in Round 8 to go equal top in the Golden Boot race with Canberra’s Michelle Heyman. Brisbane are now five points behind Sydney, having played a game more than the league-leaders.
