Round 7 preview: Sydney FC v Canberra United

Two of the competition’s form teams go head-to-head when Sydney FC host Canberra United at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Sky Blues entered Round 7 on top of the Westfield W-League table after four wins from four games.

They extended that run to five wins from five with a Round 7 victory over Melbourne City, extending the gap to their closest chasers – Canberra – to four points, meaning the Sky Blues come into this contest – their second of the round – with the opportunity to break well clear on top of the pile.

But the Green Machine look set to offer Sydney their greatest challenge to date, with Michelle Heyman firing on all cylinders as the spearhead of a Canberra side displaying grit in midfield, solidity in defence and speed and creativity in attack.

Heyman will approach the contest eager to equal, if not surpass Sam Kerr as the Westfield W-League’s all-time leading goalscorer. The Canberra striker scored a brace against Western Sydney Wanderers last time out to take her own tally to 69 goals, just one off Kerr’s benchmark.

Down the other end will be Sydney’s young gun Remy Siemsen, reinvigorated after netting her first goal of the campaign in Round 6. The 2019/20 Golden Boot winner endured a frustrating start to the campaign and will be eager to build on her first of the campaign and add to her tally against Canberra.
