Round 12 preview: Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers

Melbourne City return to action after a bye in Round 11 to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday night – the side which beat the Champions 1-0 in their last Westfield W-League outing.

Wanderers forward Leena Khamis decided the Round 10 fixture with a goal off the bench to condemn Rado Vidosic’s side to a sixth loss of 2020/21. The reigning Premiers and Champions went undefeated last season but have only one win and draw to their name from eight games in a disappointing campaign.

The Wanderers were dealt a finishing blow which crushed all hope of a Finals Series appearance in Round 11, losing 1-0 to Melbourne Victory on the road. Dean Heffernan’s side sit seven points behind fourth-placed Melbourne Victory with two games to play, leaving nothing but pride on the line in the Thursday night fixture against City.

It’s a similar situation for City who sit second-last with just four points on the board. Their hopes of a title defence ended weeks ago, but the serial winners will be desperate to taste victory once more and end the 2020/21 season on a high with a win over the Wanderers.
