Round 1 Fantasy Review: Pollicina the early pacesetter

The 2022-23 Liberty A-League season is off and running!

Over 1,200 coaches got their teams locked and loaded, just in time for the opening round of the Liberty A-League season and after an entertaining first weekend – managers are either basking in the glow of huge score or are getting ready to hit the reset button after a week.

These are the key takeaways from the opening round of fantasy football in the Liberty A-League.

Pollicina goes bang on the opening week

Two goals and an assist. What more could you ask for?

Rhianna Pollicina well and truly dominated the opening weekend of Melbourne City’s Liberty A-League season, starring in their 4-1 away thrashing of Wellington Phoenix and is looming as a must-pick in fantasy circles going forward.

Pollicina has set the tempo for the rest of the competition, with her 29 fantasy points making her the early pacesetter in A-League Women’s Fantasy. If there’s one thing for certain, expect that 6.0% ownership to rise significantly heading into round two.

Canberra, Adelaide trios round out first Team of the Week

If you had one of, let alone all three of Grace Maher, Grace Jale and Vesna Milivojevic in your team, then you would be quite a happy camper heading into round two.

The Canberra United midfield trio head up this week’s team of the week, with Maher and Jale both scoring over 20 points respectively, while Milivojevic tallied 17 of her own. The latter, particularly looks to be a popular trade option this week, priced at only $181K

Newcastle Jets’ Murphy Agnew also joined the high-scoring midfield club with 21 points, after scoring in their 2-1 loss to Brisbane.

Meanwhile, the defence was full of Adelaide representatives, as both Maruschka Waldus and Ella Tonkin scored 13 each and shot-stopper Annalee Grove tallied a whopping 16 points.

Elizabeth Anton rounded out the back-line as this week’s highest-scoring defender, tallying 18 points off the back of scoring in Perth Glory’s 2-2 draw with Canberra.

Short-term forwards provide scoring boost

Looking for a quick-fire scoring boost? Jessica McDonald and Maria Jose Rojas may have you covered.

While popular options such as Cortnee Vine and Melina Ayres failed to get off the mark, the international duo wasted no time making an impact for Western United and Melbourne City respectively, banging in goals in their respective debuts over the weekend.

World Cup-winning striker McDonald made history, scoring Western’s first-ever goal in their 1-0 win over defending champions Melbourne Victory and scoring 14 points. It’s almost a guarantee that it looks like it won’t be the last either before her three-month loan contract comes to an end.

Rojas, on the other hand, scored two goals and a whopping 20 points after only signing an injury replacement deal with City days earlier.

When Hannah Wilkinson returns, it may be a case of a straight swap from the Chilean forward to last season’s club top scorer.
