Wayne Rooney was dropped from Manchester United’s Premier League game against Swansea amid rumours that he is set to leave the club.
The newly-crowned Premier League champions welcomed Michael Laudrup-s side to Old Trafford on Sunday for manager Alex Ferguson-s final home match in charge following his decision to retire at the end of the season, but Rooney was absent from the matchday squad.
Speculation regarding the striker-s future has been rife since January, only for Manchester United to claim there was no truth in these stories. Rooney reportedly recently handed in a transfer request and was left out of the squad to face Swansea.
Veteran Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, however, does start the match, with the 38-year-old making his final home appearance after he also confirmed he would be retiring for a second time at the end of the season.
