Roar v Canberra ALW match postponed

Friday’s Liberty A-League match between Brisbane Roar and Canberra United has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

A thunderstorm hit Perry Park approximately one hour before the scheduled kick-off of 6.45pm (7.45 AEDT), dumping heavy rain on the field.

Despite the storm clearing, large puddles on one half of the ground didn’t drain away in time for play to be possible and match officials called off the fixture shortly afterwards due to an “unsafe playing surface”.

It’s the second ALW match in 24 hours to be affected by weather, after an electrical storm forced the postponement of Thursday’s clash between Wellington and Adelaide United at WIN Stadium, Wollongong.

That game was played on Friday afternoon, with the Reds securing a 4-1 win over the Phoenix.

It’s unclear at this stage when the Brisbane and Canberra clash will be played with a fixture most likely to be announced after round 14.

The Roar’s next game is against Melbourne City next Thursday while Canberra face Melbourne Victory on Tuesday.
