Roar have all the answers

Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou welcomes all the theories and plans devised to halt his side’s imposing unbeaten run, but he has a message for those behind the schemes – the Roar have a counter for every scenario.

Sydney FC were the latest team to go up against the Roar juggernaut with a game plan centred on stopping the champions’ passing game and limiting their time on the ball with pressing defence.

It worked for a while but ultimately failed as Brisbane left the SFS with a convincing 2-0 win on Saturday night – their 30th match undefeated.

As Postecoglou explained after the match, he is confident his side can fight its way out of any situation because they cover all contingencies at training.

“I know people are trying to figure out how to stop us and a lot of people are saying press against us and Sydney worked really hard to stop us getting out (of defence),” the Brisbane boss said.

“That’s all we work on at training. We work on how we’re going to play out.”

“If people are looking for solutions as to how to stop us then we’ve already worked on that.”

“It’s always been our mantra that we want to stay a step ahead.”

“There will be no complacency. If we do slip we will slip back in the pack.”

“Sydney worked pretty hard to try and contain us but as the game wore on we started to penetrate and punish them in the front third and eventually we took over the game.”

Goals to Besart Berisha and Thomas Broich either side of the break saw off a Sydney side that played second fiddle all night to the best team the Hyundai A-League has seen.

And the scary thing is Postecoglou says the best is yet to come despite fears from outside the club that Brisbane would struggle to maintain or better the benchmark set last season.

“I have said all along I expect us to be better this year,” he said.

“We have just started the season and there is no doubt we will improve during the year.”

“I was never fearful going into the season but I know other people were.”

“We’ve just started off on this journey. We’ve only taken the first few steps in what’s achievable.”
