Roar braced for Kashima test in ACL

Brisbane Roar defender Jade North says his side have no excuses but to produce their best in the club’s AFC Champions League Matchday 3 clash against Kashima Antlers in Japan on Tuesday night.

Kashima, who have recently begun their J-League Championship defence, are familiar opposition to North who played two J-League seasons with FC Tokyo and Consadole Sapporo in 2011 and 2012.

North excited about return to Japan

“The last time we played there it was against Urawa [a 1-0 win for Roar in 2015 group stage] at their home ground which was special, but to play the current champions of Japan is something special in itself.

“We know how to set up well against the Japanese sides. Last time we played in Japan we got a good result and we’ll be looking to do the same again against Kashima.”

Kashima recently took on Spanish giants Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup Final, only succumbing in an epic match in a penalty shootout.

Roar wary of Kashima’s quality

“They can certainly put teams away but we’ll be ready to go. The boys are looking fit and sharp.

“We showed against Shanghai that we can go to Asia and get a result. We do enjoy playing away from home in a great atmosphere and that’s what we strive for.

“We’re going to be up against quality opposition but that’s what we want and we’re hoping we can put on a good performance in Japan.”
