Report: Ilso inspires Adelaide to comeback win in Wellington

Ken Ilso notched his first two Hyundai A-League goals to lead Adelaide United to a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

Behind early through Mandi’s intelligent finish, Adelaide equalised courtesy of Tom Doyle’s own goal late in the first half before Ilso took charge.

The former Fortuna Dusseldorf forward opened his account in rebel Female Football Round with a well-judged header from Michael Marrone’s superb cross and later turned in Ryan Kitto’s pass to secure his side’s second victory of the season.

The visitors were made to do it the hard way as Wellington started well in their 300th Hyundai A-League outing.

Mandi marked the occasion with his maiden goal for the club, the midfielder punishing Paul Izzo for failing to get his punch beyond the edge of the box.

Filip Kurto momentarily preserved the advantage with an excellent save from Isaias’ free-kick, but the Reds found more fortunate on the stroke of half-time as defender Doyle inadvertently bundled Ben Halloran’s delivery into his own net.

Ilso completed the turnaround within two minutes of the restart and he had a double just beyond the hour, the attacker adjudged to have beaten Doyle to Kitto’s ball across the face.

Wellington were fortunate not to fall further behind when Ben Halloran nodded wide in the final minute of normal time, but his miss ultimately mattered little in the context of Adelaide’s second win in the space of three fixtures.

Mark Rudan’s men, meanwhile, remain stuck on four points as their winless run stretches to four matches.
