Remember when: Melbourne Derby begins with a bang

The Melbourne Derby has been a showpiece fixture on the Hyundai A-League calendar since bursting into life in October 2010.

Over 25,000 people packed into AAMI Park for a pulsating first encounter between Melbourne Victory and their new rivals Melbourne Heart.

Later rebranded Melbourne City, Heart built a competitive squad for their debut 2010/11 season.

Victory boss Ernie Merrick predicted a “great, true derby” for the clubs’ first clash in Round 9 and it proved just that as months of anticipation culminated in a thriller.

John Aloisi and Alex Terra scored either side of Robbie Kruse’s equaliser to secure a dream three points for Heart, who had Aziz Behich sent off the second half.

It was a sign of the entertainment to come between two clubs that haven’t lost any of their fierce friction.
