The Big Blue clashes between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory have long been a feature of the Hyundai A-League, with the rivalry beginning way back in the very first round of the competition’s inaugural season.
More than 25,000 fans packed into the Sydney Football Stadium to see which team from Australia’s two biggest cities would land the first blow in this match-up.
And there was plenty of star power on show with ex-Manchester United star Dwight Yorke leading the Sky Blues, while fiery Australian international Kevin Muscat was Victory’s skipper.
The two sides set pulses racing from the outset, producing a pulsating contest with plenty of action, drama and goals to two of the league’s marquee players.
Yorke gave Sydney FC a first-half lead when he stooped to head in Andrew Packer’s cross only for Archie Thompson to snatch a point for the visitors with an equaliser after the break.
While it finished all square the heated atmosphere and entertainment on the pitch was a sign of things to come in what has been one of the must-see clashes in the Hyundai A-League.
