The Newcastle Jets are breathing a sigh of relief after scans on Thursday cleared midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse of a break to his right leg.

Wheelhouse’s leg was injured after he was subjected to a crude tackle during a friendly against Bankstown City on Wednesday night.

It was feared the 24-year-old, who was stretchered from the field and rushed to hospital, had suffered either a break or a fracture to his lower leg.

Wheelhouse will now have additional tests to determine how much damage his ankle sustained.

“The X-rays that Jobe had late last night seem to indicate no break or fracture, which is pleasing at this stage,” Newcastle physiotherapist Adam Leslie said.

“Jobe will undergo an MRI tomorrow morning to ascertain the exact extent of the damage done during last night’s game, but we won’t know how long he’ll be sidelined for until those results are in.”

Wheelhouse is now in doubt to participate in the Jets’ Hyundai A-League season opener against Wellington on August 9.
