Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin says the club is “serious” about luring Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni as the club’s new marquee signing.
Speaking with the Adelaide Advertiser, Griffin revealed the Reds have asked Toni’s European representatives for more details about what it would take to bring the 37-year-old Down Under.
Toni has been in superb form in the Serie A, scoring twice in Hellas Verona’s 2-2 draw with Parma over the weekend, taking his tally to 21 goals in 37 games this season.

He is now the leading scorer in Serie A this season, one ahead of Juventus’ Argentinian superstar Carlos Tevez.
After falling one game short of the Hyundai A-League grand final this season, the Reds are looking to strengthen the squad and Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup winning striker would be a great start.
“If we do something we do it seriously,’’ Reds chairman Greg Griffin told the Advertiser.
“Basically we’re looking at this situation with Luca Toni seriously. We’re sitting on the whiteboard working out how we can do it.
“The first thing we have to see is whether it can be achieved and then you look at how you fund it, to be blunt.
“We’ve got a huge Italian community here and this is also great for other communities to see a fantastic striker.”
If the Reds were to snare Toni it would mean Argentine playmaker Marcelo Carrusca would lose his marquee status and would need to fit under the salary cap.
Adelaide is currently preparing to take on Spanish La Liga outfit Villarreal at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.
