Adelaide United and former Ghanaian international Lloyd Owusu have agreed to part company at the end of December.
The Reds have reached a mutual agreement with the striker to terminate his contract after 16 appearances for the club, all coming in the 2009-10 season.
Owusu managed only one goal for United last season in the Reds’ 3-3 draw with North Queensland Fury in Round 4 at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Renowned for his goal-scoring celebrations, Owusu endured a horror start to his time in Adelaide after contracting swine flu and pneumonia upon his arrival which ultimately affected his pre-season and start to the campaign.
Adelaide United FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said that Owusu was leaving on good terms.
“Both Lloyd and the club have agreed to terminate his contract, which will allow Lloyd to pursue other opportunities,” he said.
“He is a good professional who during his time here has endeared himself to the playing group. We are sure he can add something to another club in the future and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
Owusu admitted he has enjoyed his experience with the Reds but conceded the time was right to return to the UK.
“Coming to Australia has been a great experience for me, but I think the time is right for me to move back to the UK in January,” Owusu said.
“The players and fans have been brilliant to me since day one, and I can’t speak of Adelaide highly enough as a city – the people here really know their football and provide great support to the club.”
“I’ve made a lot of friends in Adelaide, and will continue to do everything I can around the place before I leave to help the club keep building on the great start we’ve had to the season.”
