Reds down City in A-League friendly

Adelaide United has defeated Melbourne City 3-1 at the City Football Academy in a pre-season friendly with Jimmy Jeggo, Marcelo Carrusca, and Sergio Cirio all on the scoresheet.

The Reds almost got off to the perfect start after a long ball from Carrusca broke the offside trap, setting Craig Goodwin off one-on-one with new City goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, but Goodwin’s effort was beaten away by the former English Premier League ‘keeper.

City had a chance to get an early goal in the 14th minute when Aaron Mooy found Stefan Mauk in-behind the United defence, but Mauk’s heavy touch let him down and the chance was squandered.

City were punished shortly after with Reds midfielder Jimmy Jeggo on hand to finish from close range following a neat flick from Marcelo Carrusca.

14th: James Jeggo – Adelaide United, 1132 passes

Five minutes later, Carrusca bagged a goal for himself when his brilliant free-kick on the edge of the box deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net, leaving Sorensen completely helpless.

The match’s quick tempo continued into the opening stages of the second half, with United increasing their lead just before the hour mark.

A defence-splitting through ball from Isaías put Sergio Cirio in behind with the Spaniard calmly slotting past Sorensen.

The hosts managed to get a consolation goal back through Wade Dekker in stoppage time.
