Reds confirm Boland’s departure

Adelaide United have confirmed midfielder Mirko Boland will leave the Hyundai A-League club at the end of the season to return to his native Germany.

It’s understood Boland has inked a deal with VfB Lübeck, who play in the fourth tier in Germany.

“I have a good opportunity to explore back home, but I am completely focused on the rest of this season with the Reds,” Boland told the Reds’ official website.

“We are in a tough situation at the moment, but we are still hungry to reach the finals and see how far we can go.”

Boland is in his second season with Adelaide after joining the club for the start of the 2018/19 Season.

He was involved in the club’s back-to-back FFA Cup Final wins, despite enduring a couple of injury disrupted campaigns.

The 32-year-old has been restricted to just five appearances this season under Gertjan Verbeek, with just one start.

“Despite two injury interrupted seasons with the club, Mirko has always given his best and has been an absolute professional throughout his time with us at Adelaide United,´ Adelaide United Director of Football Bruce Djite said

“He is a very well-respected member of the squad and the club and we wish him all the best for his future, but have no doubt his focus remains completely on our current season.”

The Reds have dropped out of the top six in recent weeks, currently seventh on the ladder on the back of four straight defeats ahead of a bye in Round 24.
