There is nothing but pride at stake for both these teams, but both will be keen to show their fans that 2009/10 can be a much brighter season for their clubs.
Newcastle will officially finish last, a huge fall from grace from last year, but with the AFC Champions League starting up in March, the players will be well aware of their need to keep on the good side of Gary van Egmond. Several times this year, van Egmond has been scathing of his players and little wonder considering they have lost five of their past six and won just one in 11.
Last week, the Jets were unable to compete with ladder-leader Adelaide, going down without much of a fight 2-0. Before that it was a 3-0 defeat by Wellington and a 2-1 defeat by Central Coast. It’s been 261 minutes since the Jets last scored a goal.
With so many players out through injury, van Egmond has few options but Jobe Wheelhouse and Taylor Regan come in for the suspended Adam Griffiths.
Perth showed it will not go gently, by inflicting a shock 3-2 defeat of Melbourne last week. Eugene Dadi was the star with his second brace of the season, while Scott Neville gave Glory fans a taste of the future with his assured performance at the back.
It broke a run of losses for the Glory and gave an indication of the progress David Mitchell has made with this team since the turmoil that engulfed the club earlier in the season.
Dadi has already made his exit to FC Vaduz on loan, but has signed up for another year while Nikita Rukavystya is off trying his hand in Holland with FC Twente.
