It-s been a strange season for Melbourne Victory. At times they have flattered to deceive, sometimes they have been poor, while on plenty of occasions they have been excellent. All of which has made for a massively inconsistent campaign. Other than a four-match winning streak in December, Victory haven-t really put a run of good results together all season.
However, that fantastic quartet of wins over the Christmas period was enough to propel Ernie Merrick-s men into a position where they are ready to cement a top-six place over the last couple of games of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season. The good news for Victory as they hunt three points is that they are thus far unbeaten against Wednesday-s opponents in the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season. After playing out a 0-0 draw in New South Wales that was far more entertaining than the scoreline suggests, Melbourne grabbed a dramatic late winner in a thriller at AAMI Park.
The game looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw before Robbie Kruse turned past three defenders and laid a perfect ball across for super-sub Ricardinho to tap home in the 90th minute after a lovely Ruben Zadkovich goal had cancelled out Carlos Hernandez’s wonderful strike in the first half. Another such result will go down well with the Melbourne faithful as they look to get into the finals and banish memories of last year-s Grand Final heartache.
Jets though, are still in the mix for a play-off spot as well and will prove to be a tough nut to crack for Ernie Merrick-s players. Branko Culina knows that, if his side can pick up a result at Etihad, they will be in a fantastic position for an assault on the top six, with very winnable home games against Sydney and Perth to immediately follow, before their season ends with a potentially blockbusting F3 derby against Central Coast Mariners.
This one is tough to call, as both teams are capable of brilliance and of the occasional horror show. Which Victory side will turn up at Etihad? The one that raced into a two-goal lead against rivals Heart, or the one that let that same advantage slip and that ended the game with ten men?
And what about Jets? Will they put in a performance similar to the ones that saw them win at AAMI Park against Melbourne Heart and smash Adelaide, or will they capitulate as they did in the Gold Coast recently, when they were hit for five?
