Match preview: Brisbane Roar v Western Sydney Wanderers

Brisbane Roar host Western Sydney Wanderers in a Thursday night clash that may well determine each side’s Westfield W-League fate.

The last time these sides met in Round 2, Carson Pickett helped Brisbane grab all three points thanks to a wily free-kick on 39 minutes.

Mel Andreatta’s side are in finals contention following their bright start to the 2018/19 Season, while Dan Barrett’s crew will need a Herculean effort to finish in the top four.

The reigning Premiers caused the upset of Round 7 with a 4-3 win over Melbourne Victory that snapped the leaders’ unbeaten start to the season.

That complemented Brisbane’s bright start to the season where they grabbed seven points from their first four games, giving them a platform from which to build their season.

The 2018/19 Season has not been as kind for the Wanderers. Their campaign kicked off with a 3-0 home defeat to their crosstown rivals Sydney FC, and from that day on it appeared to be an uphill battle.

To their credit, Western Sydney has grown in stature and are beginning to find the back of the net.

Kylie Ledbrook’s stunner against Melbourne Victory was a memorable moment, and the Wanderers were unlucky to not to steal all three points in their 2-2 draw with Canberra United.

However, goals win matches and there just haven’t been enough from the Red and Black. That the side failed to score until Round 5 was always going to make a finals appearance difficult, compounded by narrow, 1-0 losses to Newcastle Jets and Brisbane.
