Once again, Skilled Park plays temporary host this Saturday to Brisbane Roar-s quest for silverware. With the home side having only played on Wednesday, this game has been pushed back a day from its original date, and will now take place on Saturday at 4.30pm.
It-s sure to be worth waiting for though, as the ladder leaders take on finals hopefuls Melbourne Heart. There is every chance Roar will be giving their fans the gift of three points on Saturday. So far in the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season, they have beaten this weekend’s opponents on both occasions. Last time the two sides faced-off, at AAMI Park, they grabbed a Heart-stopping 88th minute winner through the ever-impressive Jean Carlos Solorzano after the equally dangerous Kosta Barbarouses had equalised an early Melbourne goal.
It was in the meeting between the teams at Suncorp though, that Roar first showed real signs of their title credentials. In September they tore Melbourne Heart to shreds as, on the back of a solid enough start to the season, everything came together perfectly.
Goals from Reinaldo, Erik Paartalu, Mitch Nichols and Kosta Barbarouses were the reward for a fantastic display of flowing passing and fast-paced football that would set the benchmark for their style of play for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season. Remarkably, they found the net more times in this game than in the total of their previous six matches since the season began. With the floodgates finally opened, they haven’t stopped scoring since.
However, while they have experienced nothing but misery against Roar this season, Melbourne Heart will go into this match with everything to play for and last weekend proved just how much spirit they have. Amid an unbelievable atmosphere created by over 32,000 fans, John Van ‘t Schip-s team looked set for defeat, having fallen 2-0 behind in the first-half, but fought back brilliantly thanks to a brace from frontman John Aloisi.
With his first goal coming at the death of the opening stanza and the equaliser arriving early in the second-half, it is testament to the guts that Heart showed that they ended up disappointed not to have taken all three points. So, even if Roar get their noses in front early on in this match-up, the home side can take nothing for granted. With Brisbane once again playing in unfamiliar surroundings, and facing their second gruelling run-out in four days, Heart might just fancy their chances of sneaking something that will keep their finals dreams very much alive.
Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou no longer has defender Luke DeVere at his disposal, after he left the club last week to sign for Korean K-League side Gyeongnam FC. Meanwhile, Heart will be missing Adrian Zahra for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season after scans revealed partial damage to multiple ligaments.
