What a match looms in Brisbane as the Roar become the latest side to attempt to break Melbourne City’s undefeated Westfield W-League run.
The pair fought out one of the all-time great Westfield W-League encounters in last season’s semi-final. On that occasion City prevailed on penalties following a scoreless draw. It remains the only time Melbourne City have failed to win in their 17 competition matches. The only other time the pair matched-up, City won 1-0 on the Gold Coast in a result which locked up the premiership.
There will not be quite as much importance attached to this match but a quality contest is assured. Brisbane fans have come out in force so far this season, witnessing a win over leaders Sydney FC and a tough 1-0 loss to two-time champions Canberra.
City have found goals relatively tough to come by this season, scoring six in their three outings thus far. Sunshine Coast product Larissa Crummer, who was the league’s top-scorer last season, remains on the injured list and will miss the trip to her home state. City, however, will unveil tall American striker Beverley Yanez, who boasts significant experience in USA’s NWSL as well as Japan’s Nadeshiko League.
