Clinical City sink Adelaide in pre-season friendly

Goals to Lachie Wales and Dario Vidosic has seen Melbourne City defeat Adelaide United 2-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday.

Both goals were scored in the space of four minutes in the first half, in a solid hitout for both clubs ahead of the start of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 Season next month.

New keeper Mark Birighitti made his debut for the club in the second half, pulling off a smart save to keep out a Craig Goodwin thunderbolt as the Reds sought a way back into the match.

Goodwin also smashed a valley onto the woodwork 17 minutes from time as Adelaide finished with a flurry.

But the damage was done by City in the first half.

The first goal came on 12 minutes as Scott Jamieson and Bruno Fornaroli combined to get Wales into a good position and the ex-Central Coast Mariner slotted his one-on-one effort past Paul Izzo.

HOMECOMING: Reds legend Vidmar returns as Director of Football

City doubled their lead four minutes later as a wonderful turn from Luke Brattan in the middle of the park opened the door for the opportunity.

His through ball on the right to speedster Michael O’Halloran made room for the Scotsman to drive down the wing as his cutback to the run of Vidosic saw the experienced forward make no mistake.

The match was City’s last ahead of their FFA Cup 2018 quarter-final against Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park next Wednesday night.

The Reds are in FFA Cup action the following week, as they head to Sydney to take on NSW NPL side APIA Leichhardt.
