The accolades for Brisbane Roar have continued, with coach Ange Postecoglou recognised for his work at the club by being awarded Coach of the Year at the Queensland Sport Awards.
In a double celebration, Brisbane-s Grand Final triumph against Central Coast Mariners in front of more than 50,000 fans was awarded the Sports Event of the Year.
Postecoglou said he was humbled to have won the award amongst such esteemed company, which included Queensland Reds coach Ewan McKenzie and Queensland Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke.
“When you look at the field last night, it was a ridiculous year for Queensland sport,” Postecolgou said.
“The coach of the year candidates were all outstanding and all champions in their field. So I was pretty pleased for the club and it was very humbling on the night to receive it.”
Despite the flow of praise that has come from within the game, Postecoglou admitted it was pleasing for the club’s achievements to be recognised as part of the broader sporting community, where football can sometimes be overlooked.
“It-s been our focus. It has not just been about being successful, but to get a firm foothold in the sporting landscape,” Postecoglou said.
“It-s not easy, because you have teams with great traditions here and champion teams.
“That was our battle, to not only be successful but also to be a credible sporting identity.
“So it was great recognition for the code and the club.”
