Popovic not ruling out Hyundai A-League move

Former Western Sydney Wanderers boss Tony Popovic admits he wouldn’t rule out a potential return to coach in the Hyundai A-League.

Popovic sent shockwaves through the competition just a week before the 2017/18 Season started when he walked out on the Wanderers to take a job with Turkish top flight outfit Karabukspor.

It turned out to be an ill-fated move for the former Caltex Socceroos defender, lasting just nine games before parting ways.

Now back in Australia and looking for a new coaching job, there has been speculation Popovic could return to the Hyundai A-League.

“I wouldn’t rule out the A-League now and I wouldn’t rule out overseas,” he said on Fox Sports’ A-League Hour show.

“It all depends on if and what the opportunity is and trying to make the best decision that you can do a good job in a new project wherever that may be and hopefully that’ll be soon.”

With Graham Arnold to leave Sydney FC at the end of the season to take up a role with the Caltex Socceroos, Popovic has even been linked with the vacant Sky Blues position.

Asked if he could link up with the Wanderers’ biggest rivals, Popovic said: “No. I haven’t put my name in and that’s not to say that Sydney even want me as a coach but from a personal point of view that one won’t happen.”
