While the final nine rounds of the Hyundai A-League – also known as “The Chase” – will be all about teams pushing their claims for the finals, it’s also a chance for Australian players to stake their claims for this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.
New Caltex Socceroos boss Bert van Marwijk confirmed on Thursday he will be watching some of Australia’s best players in the Hyundai A-League this weekend and in coming weeks as June’s tournament approaches.
The Dutchman wants to assess as many players as possible before March’s friendlies against Norway and Colombia, meaning any players who catch the eye could force their way into the reckoning.
And there’s been some exceptional Aussie performers in the Hyundai A-League already this season who could come into considerations.
While the likes of James Troisi, Nathan Burns, Rhys Williams and Alex Wilkinson are all experienced in the international arena, there’s some young talent van Marwijk might also be looking out for.
