Poll: Choose your favourite foreign marquee moment

The Hyundai A-League is set to be blessed with an influx of exciting, fresh talent from abroad for the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.

Expectations are high for the new international stars and in particular the likes of Keisuke Honda and Siem de Jong, who have the added pressure of living up to marquee billing.

But foreign marquees have consistently delivered to brilliant effect in previous years as we recall here, recapping some of their finest moments.

Yorke makes history for Sydney FC

He came, he popped his collar, he conquered.

Dwight Yorke’s arrival added prestige off the pitch in the inaugural season and he immediately delivered on it, scoring Sydney FC’s first ever goal in a Round 1 meeting with Melbourne Victory.

None other than Archie Thompson eventually equalised, but Yorke had laid a marker what became a highly successful stint in Australia.

Fowler fires Fury to first win

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler had a huge reputation to live up to upon signing for North Queensland Fury in 2009.

He didn’t disappoint. In a Round 6 trip to Allianz Stadium, the former England striker lashed in a superb dipping strike to stun Sydney FC and give the visiting Fury their maiden victory.

ADP achieves lift-off

Scoreless and beaten on his Sydney FC debut in 2012, Alessandro Del Piero was out to prove a point when Newcastle Jets came to town in Round 2.

The Juventus great did just that 27 minutes the match, rising to the grandstand occasion as he bent in a trademark free-kick that quickly made headlines back in Italy.

Heskey rocks the Hunter

Emile Heskey opened his Newcastle Jets account in the same match as Del Piero’s stunner amid a successful start to life in Australia.

One of the ex-Premier League man’s finest moments came with a predatory goal to help put away Melbourne Victory in Round 4, the striker contorting his body to beat Nathan Coe with a splendid overhead effort.

Outrageous from Ono

In a season which saw three mega marquees grace the competition, Shinji Ono become as adored as any player to have since pitched up at Western Sydney Wanderers.

The attacking midfielder’s crowning glory was the sublime goal he scored to book Western Sydney’s 2013 Grand Final berth, dinking a delightful left-footed chip over a stranded Michael Theo.

City revved up by Villa

FIFA World Cup winner, 98-time Spain international and Hyundai A-League goalscorer.

Thus it was written into history when, in his first club match outside his native country, former Valencia and Barcelona star David Villa struck on debut for Melbourne City.

The supreme poacher clinically picked out the bottom corner just 20 minutes after stepping onto the pitch against Sydney FC in October 2014.

Janko makes startling statement

Marc Janko boasts one of the best scoring records in Hyundai A-League history thanks in part to his ability to conjure wonder strikes like that against Brisbane Roar four years ago.

Sydney FC’s towering centre-forward took Jamie Young’s hurried clearance on his chest and, without letting the ball drop, drove an incredible volley in off the bounce from 30 yards.

Engelaar strikes from down town

It was one of the most jaw-dropping moments in Hyundai A-League history.

The first half of Dutchman Orlando Engelaar’s tenure with Melbourne Heart was riddled with injury as the imposing midfielder recovered from a fractured leg suffered in pre-season.

But when he arrived, he did so in some style. Engelaar’s crowning moment came with a stunning goal from inside his own half against Central Coast Mariners in March 2014, a strike that captured interest from around the globe.

Berisha builds his Grand Final legacy

No player relished the big occasion quite like Besart Berisha.

In the 2015 Grand Final – his third in Australia and first for Melbourne Victory – the competition’s greatest ever goalscorer got the party started, sniffing the opener out of little as he swivelled away from two defenders and rifled home.

Castro’s electrifying finish

Diego Castro has been the ultimate showman for Perth Glory setting jetting in from La Liga.

He capped off a remarkable debut season in typically genius style back in April 2016, hitting a thunderous volley into the bottom far corner to yet again wow nib Stadium.

Broich drags Brisbane back from the brink

From delivering Grand Final-saving corners to scoring last-gasp Elimination Final headers, Thomas Broich could just about do it all.

It was the unforgettable German’s turn to play match-winner against Melbourne Victory in April 2016, rising to decisively meet a 93rd-minute corner that completed a rapid-fire fightback.

Bruno’s bicycle belter

By the time the 2016 Finals Series rolled around, we thought we had seen it all from Bruno Fornaroli in a sparkling introductory campaign.

But City’s talismanic striker simply went to a new level with his 22nd and penultimate goal of the season.

Fornaroli expertly positioned his body before leaping into the air to rattle in an unstoppable bicycle kick, the first of a brace he netted in the Elimination Final encounter.
