He admits he watched his wonder-strike “quite a few times” but Wellington Phoenix teenager Sarpreet Singh insists he won’t rest on his laurels for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League campaign.
Singh, who turned 19 on Tuesday, capped his first Hyundai A-League start against Perth Glory last Saturday with a stunning long-range goal.
Less than three minutes into the match at Westpac Stadium, Singh crunched a sweet shot with his left foot which sailed past Liam Reddy into the top corner.
“I remember some good build-up play, it started all the way from the back…exactly what we trained,” Singh explained.
“And then it got to a point where I had to be in between the lines and that’s where I was, and I turned and I saw that side of the goal free and hit it sweetly.
“My first thought was to shoot.
“[I’ve watched it] quite a few times,” he added.
“It’s always pleasing to get your first goal in the A-League, so it’s a start for me. I need to kick on and carry on, you can’t just stop there.”
In a season of few highs for Phoenix, the emergence of Singh is a positive sign for the future.
Aside from his goal, the young playmaker looked assured on the ball in Wellington’s midfield, confident to take on his opponent and always looking to play forward.
Singh was happy with his first start in the Hyundai A-League and hopes he’s done enough to convince coach Darije Kalezic to keep him in the eleven for Friday night’s clash with Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.
“I basically want to keep doing what I’m doing, but with consistency, because sometimes young kids just come in and they play one good game, and then they’re out,” Singh admitted.
“Performing week in, week out is what the good professionals do.”
Despite the win over Glory, Phoenix remain on the foot of the Hyundai A-League ladder on 17 points, nine points off the top six with just seven matches remaining.
