Phoenix sign Eredivisie goalkeeper

Wellington Phoenix have announced the signing of Polish goalkeeper Filip Kurto from Eredivisie club Roda JC Kerkrade.

The 27-year-old began his career in his native country of Poland at Wisla Kraków, one of Poland’s most successful clubs.

Kurto also represented his country right through to the U-21s, before signing for Dutch Eredivisie side, Roda JC in 2012.

He enjoyed three successful seasons at the top of Dutch football including helping Roda JC to remain in the Dutch premier division.

Filip couldn’t wait to sign for the Wellington Phoenix, citing the Hyundai A-League as a great place to push on and fulfil his potential.

“I have known about the A-League for a while, and when I was told there was interest, I felt this offer came at the perfect time for me.

“The Manager has a real enthusiasm and passion to win and he stressed to me that he wants players who will give everything for the club.

“That’s the way I play, so that is what brought me here.”

Head Coach Mark Rudan said Kurto possesses all the qualities to be a Hyundai A-League success.

“We have known about him for some time, he has all the attributes to be one of the best goalkeepers in the A-League,” he said.

“We look forward to him starting with the group and showing what he’s capable of.”

Kurto is the second new signing for the Phoenix, after Steven Taylor signed from Peterborough United last week.
