Perth Glory sign La Liga’s Diego Castro

Perth Glory FC have announced the addition of Spanish winger Diego Castro Gimenez as their marquee signing for the 2015-16 Hyundai A-League season.

Castro arrives in Perth with a wealth of experience, and will become Perth’s international marquee player pending completion of a medical.

He makes the switch to Australia’s premier football competition after spending a majority of his career in Spain’s La Liga, most recently at Getafe CF.

The 33-year-old Spaniard represented the ‘Azulones’ (the Blues) 129 times in a four year spell at the Club, scoring on 18 occasions including one against footballing powerhouse, Real Madrid.

Before that, Castro enjoyed stints at Sporting Gijon and Malaga after starting his career at Pontevedra.

Speaking exclusively to PGFC Online, Castro said the he was looking forward to his latest football chapter.

“I arrive in Australia still hungry for success and with hopes of challenging for trophies with my new team mates,” he said.

“The Hyundai A-League is a competition that is gaining respect in Europe and I am excited to be involved with Perth Glory for the coming season.”

Glory Head coach Kenny Lowe said Castro was an exciting acquisition for the club.

“Diego has played in the highest leagues of Spanish football for a long period of time playing nearly 300 games and scoring around 60 goals, so there is no doubting his quality,” he said.

“He gives us another option in attack, and really enhances the squad for both the coming season.”

Club Owner, Tony Sage, was also pleased with the arrival of Castro, saying that he had the potential to thrill Glory fans.

“Diego loves to run at defenders and score goals. I’ve seen vision of him playing and scoring against Real Madrid so to have him lining up in purple this season is very exciting for everyone.”

Castro is the club’s seventh off-season recruit following the addition of Antony Golec, Ante Covic, Hagi Gligor, Jerrad Tyson, Marc Warren and Alex Grant.

Castro will arrive in Perth shortly to begin training with his new teammates.
