Perry picks football over cricket

Sporting superstar Ellyse Perry will lace up her football boots instead of cricket spikes this weekend, with the dual international choosing to represent her state in the Westfield W-League semi-finals over the national one-day cricket final.

Perry will take her place in the Sydney FC XI when they host Melbourne Victory at Jubilee Oval in Kogarah on Sunday afternoon. Canberra United played Brisbane Roar on Saturday in the other top-four matchup, with both winners going straight through to next week-s grand final.

“I had a clash this weekend with some cricket commitments but it-s really exciting to be involved with Sydney FC this Sunday and I-m really looking forward to it,” she said.

“It-s always lovely to be involved at this time of the season and it-s sort of the reason why you play as well. It will be a really good contest on Sunday.”

Having gone through much of the season undefeated, Sydney FC lost to Canberra United twice in a fortnight to surrender the Premiership in the final game of the regular season. The Sky Blues will be eager to atone for last weekend-s 2-1 loss which saw them leapfrogged by a point in the final standings.

Perry set up an equaliser for her team when she picked out Sam Kerr with a pin-point cross but Sydney were ultimately undone by a goal from American import Stephanie Ochs.

The defender missed her side-s 5-1 drubbing of Victory in the opening round of the season as she was representing Australia in the Ashes series in England. However she was committed to being part of the team that hopes to claim back-to-back Championships.

“We set out at the start of the season to defend the title that we won last season and that-s still very much our goal. It would be fantastic to make it, but our focus is on this weekend and it-s going to be a really tough game. Melbourne are an incredibly good side with a lot of quality players,” Perry concluded.
