Young North Queensland striker Chris Payne has played his last game for the club after scans indicated he will need surgery this week on a knee injury.
The 20-year-old tore the right lateral meniscus during the club’s loss to Melbourne Victory last week and will need a six-to-eight week recovery period.
As last-placed North Queensland have just two games remaining this season, and with Payne having been signed by the Jets for the next term, the up-and-coming striker has played his last game in the lime green.
Fury operations manager, Robbie Middleby said it would have been nice for North Queensland fans to have given Payne a decent send-off.
“It’s an unfortunate end to the season for Chris and also for Fury fans looking forward to seeing him play next Saturday against Brisbane Roar,” Middleby said.
“Chris has certainly made the most of his opportunity at the Fury this season and has played some excellent football along the way.”
“He has a bright future and we wish him all the best with his endeavours.”
Although his 2010-11 campaign has been somewhat blighted by injury, Payne still managed four goals from 21 appearances for the Fury.
However, he also laid off four assists and some of his interplay with fellow striker David Williams has been worthy of any highlight reel.
