The Mariners have had a habit of unearthing some exciting young talent over the years and Ascroft is no exception. In fact, it’s time to go wild about Harry!
The 20-year-old defender was relatively unknown proposition to Australian fans when he joined the club at the start of this season but has impressed many with his skill, rugged style and composure on the ball.
Ascroft arrived in Gosford after two seasons playing in the Netherlands with VVV-Venlo, who spotted him whilst playing State League football with Sydney University.
But having seen the way the likes of Mat Ryan, Trent Sainsbury, Alex Wilkinson, Mile Jedinak and Tom Rogic have blossomed in their careers from the Mariners, Ascroft had no hesitation joining the club at the start of this season.
And the Kissing Point-junior has looked right at home from the outset and is a genuine contender in the NAB Young Footballer of the Year race.
The stats tell the story. In his 11 games for the season, Ascroft has scored twice, made four key passes and made 299 passes at more than 70 percent.
But it’s defensively where he’s really excelled, making 33 clearances, 28 interceptions and 64 duels, as well as winning 100 percent of his 16 tackles.
Pretty impressive stuff from a player worth keeping an eye on.
