A-Leagues duo help Olyroos end U23 international tournament unbeaten

In-form Western United attacker Matthew Grimaldi and Western Sydney Wanderers’ Aidan Simmons scored as the Subway Olyroos played out a 2-2 draw with hosts Qatar in their Doha International U-23 Cup finale.

Isuzu UTE A-League talent was front and centre on Wednesday (AEDT) – Grimaldi opened the scoring for the Australia Under-23s inside seven minutes before Qatar equalised with 14 minutes of regulation remaining.

For Grimaldi, it continued his fine form, having impressed with high-flying Western – scoring twice against Wellington Phoenix on March 8, his first career brace.

Western Sydney defender Simmons restored the Olyroos’ lead in the 87th minute, only for Qatar to level things up once more in the second minute of stoppage time.

It was an all-A-Leagues starting XI against Qatar, with Dylan Peraic-Cullen (Central Coast Mariners), Josh Rawlins (Melbourne Victory), Kane Vidmar (Western United), Jordi Valadon (Melbourne Victory), Nathanael Blair(Perth Glory), Yaya Dukuly (Adelaide United), Ethan Alagich (Adelaide United), Nathan Paull (Central Coast Mariners), Simmons, Grimaldi and Aydan Hammond (Western Sydney Wanderers) in the line-up.

The result ensured Tony Vidmar’s Australia ended the U23 tournament unbeaten following a goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates and a 2-1 win over Croatia.

Dukuly, meanwhile, was named man of the match against Qatar and Player of the Tournament.
