Well what a spectacular start Canberra have had to this year-s Westfield W- League!
With a convincing 4-1 win over Perth last weekend, the green machine will be looking to make it two wins in a row when they face the Roar this Saturday. But for those of you who think Brisbane Roar will be a pushover following their 4-2 defeat to Sydney, think again!
Even though Brisbane suffered their first loss for the season, there were many positives to come out of the match for the Queensland girls moving forward into the Week Two.
Tameka Butt and Lana Harch haven’t hurt their chances at all in contending for goal of the year. Both goals scored against Sydney FC were long range driven shots into the upper 90, dipping over the keeper. However, Brisbane’s defense will have to lift it a notch this week as Canberra United’s strike force have come out firing in their season opener against Perth Glory!
Canberra’s striker Michelle Heyman seems to have picked up exactly where she left off last season. The 2009 Westfield W-League golden boot winner opened her season in style on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick in the win over Perth. Cian Maciejewski also carved her name into the score sheet, thanks to a superb cross from Emily van Egmond.
With Westfield Matilda Sally Shipard controlling the midfield in this impressive Canberra team, the girls from our Nation’s capital are turning out to be quite the surprise package, sitting in first place!
So, can Canberra United stay on top of the ladder making it two wins in a row, or will the Brisbane Roar display their true form and upset this fairytale start for the girls in Green!?
