Green Army, it-s time to welcome back a one-time Fury legend. Former England striker Robbie Fowler will certainly have happy memories of the place that he cut his teeth in Australian football, and is sure to receive a warm response from the supporters that idolised him during his season in the green.
However, once that first whistle blows, any affection that the Green Army still have for the legendary player will go out of the window, temporarily at least. For North Queensland Fury, it will be all about getting three points and showing Fowler just what he left behind.
Fowler was absent the last time the sides met in the torrential rain at Dairy Farmers Stadium. The game represented former Fury assistant coach Ian Ferguson-s first game in charge of Glory, and it proved to be an unhappy start, as cracking goals from Chris Payne and David Williams helped to secure three vital points for the Queensland side and end a painful seven match winless streak.
In contrast, the result was Glory-s fifth straight defeat in a run that totalled an astonishing seven loses in a row.
Fury-s loyal F-Troop will be hoping their heroes get a larger slice of luck than they did the last time they turned out in Townsville. Okay, so they may have had a bit of good fortune early on against Melbourne Heart, when Dyron Daal scored with the side of his head in the 12th minute, but, after that, their luck ended.
The cries of “offside,” and “handball” from the ever-fervent home support fell on deaf ears as controversial goals rained in and, once again, Fury were left with the bitter and lingering taste of an unjust defeat. However, what fantastic signs of encouragement came from last week-s trip to local rivals Brisbane Roar.
At Suncorp Stadium, where so many teams have been hit out of the ground, Fury were minutes away from causing the shock of the season.
A star turn from David Williams and a goal from Gareth Edds almost did enough to secure a 1-0 win, but Roar-s pressure told in the end and honours were even at the final whistle. However, while the Green Army will be disappointed at conceding late on, they should focus on what a great performance it was and use it as a springboard to push on up the table and keep trying to shoot the moon in these difficult times.
Since halting their run of defeats with a goalless draw at home to Melbourne Heart, Glory have continued to struggle. Robbie Fowler-s stunning hat-trick aside, Glory simply can-t buy a goal, and last week-s loss in Sydney showed just how desperately they need some firepower.
The game could have gone either way, yet it was the home side that came good, with two late strikes. The away defeat was yet another disappointment in an increasingly frustrating season for Glory fans.
