It-s derby time at The Beach! Get ready for an intense midweek clash at Skilled Park, as United get ready to face the Fury of North Queensland.
You wanted goals and your boys delivered! In the build up to the last game at Skilled Park, The Beach was called upon to roar their goal-shy team on to score.
The noise from the stands was met with the perfect response from their heroes on the field, who, thanks to a brilliant brace from Joel Porter and a well-taken Jason Culina finish, turned over Sydney 3-1.
However, as good as the encouragement from the fans was, this team deserves to be seen by more than the 2536 loyal supporters that roared them on to the win over last season-s all-conquering champions. So, now is surely the time to get along to Skilled Park and show your support for a side that has a really good chance of challenging for honours this season.
When the sides met in Townsville a month ago, it was United that came out on top and, in doing so, stretched their unbeaten run to eight games. Miron Bleiberg-s well-drilled side took the lead on 11 minutes through Adama Traore but failed to push on and kill the game off.
So, when Mark Hughes snatched an equaliser in the 45th minute, Fury were well and truly back in it. The game continued to ebb and flow until Dino Djulbic-s 84th minute goal secured a late victory for the visitors.
There isn-t a huge amount of history between the clubs, what with them both only joining the Hyundai A-League last season, but in the four meetings between the sides, honours are even, with both sides picking up two wins.
While Gold Coast have the edge this season, it was Fury that came out on top in the head-to-heads in the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season. On the last weekend of their season, goals from David Williams and Terry Cooke gave Fury a 2-1 win at Dairy Farmers Stadium, whereas two Robbie Fowler strikes were enough to sink United at Skilled Park earlier in the campaign.
However, the first ever meeting between the two Queensland clubs was an absolute rout in favour of Gold Coast United. In their first ever home game, four goals from Shane Smeltz helped them smash five past a bamboozled Fury and maintain a 100 percent start to the season.
This season started so differently for both of these rivals, with Fury flying out of the traps and Gold Coast starting slowly. However, gradually Miron Bleiberg-s side found amazing form while Fury slipped away.
As we cross the mid-point in the season, will United maintain their push for honours? Will Fury pull away from the bottom end of the table? One thing is certain, though the teams are at opposite ends of the ladder, the points are just as crucial to both of them. So, expect an epic derby clash as they battle it out at in front of The Beach. Grab a ticket and experience the excitement live!
