Shout to the top: Redmayne says humility drives Sydney success

Goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne says the tight-knit nature of Sydney FC’s squad has been a big driver on the road to success in this season’s Hyundai A-League.

The Sky Blues take on Perth Glory at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon to contest their third Grand Final in five seasons, and Redmayne insists that focus – not arrogance – drives the Sky Blues’ ongoing quest for silverware.

The 30-year-old, set to start in his second Hyundai A-League Grand Final, said Sydney’s tight-knit squad ensures no player is allowed to get ideas above their station, despite the accumulation of four major trophies – and several other near misses – over the last three seasons.

“There are not many tall poppies in our change room,” Redmayne said.

“If there were, there are plenty of boys that would quickly whip you back down into shape.

“We’re a very humble squad, a very tight-knit squad. I think that’s pivotal to our success this year.”

Redmayne and his teammates will need to call on that spirit as they take on a Perth Glory side brimming with confidence and solidarity of their own.

Despite surrendering a lead twice in their Semi Final against Adelaide United last weekend, Tony Popovic’s side held their nerve to down the Reds in an epic penalty shootout.

How to watch A-League

Add to this a heaving Optus Stadium which is predicted to host the largest-ever Hyundai A-League Grand Final crowd, and fans are set for what Redmayne describes as an ‘immense’ clash.

“It’s definitely going to be an amazing atmosphere. It’s certainly one of the biggest crowds I’ve played in front of,” Redmayne said.

“But I know all the boys, once we cross that white line, it’s game on and you almost kind of block out the crowd.

“We’ll savour it when we walk out there, but as soon as that whistle goes, we’ll be on the game, switched on and solely focused on the round ball.”
