Newcastle warming to Asian Cup

Tickets for Newcastle’s 2015 AFC Asian Cup clashes are tipped to ‘exceed expectations’ say local organising staff who’ve briefed Newcastle Council this week.

Newcastle will host the highly rated Japanese as well as Palestine, Oman and Kuwait in qualifying matches next January.

A semi-final and a third and fourth play-off will also be hosted at Hunter Stadium, which will see its surface relaid before the tournament.

The Newcastle Herald reports Michael Brown, chief executive of the local organising committee, has told Newcastle council the city is well placed ahead of the tournament in January 2015.

“There will be a huge number of people coming to the Hunter, and we’re making sure that their time here, not just at the games, is better than anything else,” he said, adding that ticket sales were “on track and should surpass expectations”.

He also confirmed all volunteers positions had now been filled.

In other news, Newcastle Jets memberships went on sale at noon today. They start at $60 for a child and $120 for an adult. Click here for more information and to sign up.

Club CEO Robbie Middleby was confident of increasing the 10,200 members from last season.”Membership prices are the same as last year and easily the most affordable in the A-League,” he told the Newcastle Herald.
