The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) today announced that the Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix will co-host an A-League double-header on Sunday 21 March at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.
The Wellington Phoenix will face Brisbane Roar FC in the first of the two fixtures followed by the Newcastle Jets meeting Adelaide United in the later game.
APL Commissioner Greg O’Rourke welcomed the initiative which was driven by the Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix.
“We were recently approached by the Jets and Phoenix about the possibility of staging this double-header and we then got to work to make this more than just two football matches,” said O’Rourke.
“This event is an example how clubs can work together with the local community to create an exciting opportunity for fans.
“This is also an ideal occasion for interstate fans to travel to the Hunter region for a weekend away, watching quality football matches and visiting local sights & venues,” concluded O’Rourke.
