He went close last week but on Friday night Luke Wilkshire finally scored a league goal – and a new pair of boots may’ve been the difference in rediscovering his goal-scoring fortunes.
After his goal gave Sydney FC a precious 1-0 win over City, a beaming Wilkshire told Fox Sports.
“I had a few good chances last week and this week I decided to change [boots] and I told the boys about it and thankfully it did [change his fortunes].”
Wilkshire’s last goal was in a Moscow derby nine years ago.
“I was disappointed not to score last week [against Perth Glory] … and this week we moved the ball well but I thought they [City] sat back, especially in the first half.
“That’s us, we’re used to winning,” he said of being back on top of the ladder.
Fellow Sydney FC full back Michael Zullo had another strong game with his assist for Wilkshire’s goal courtesy of a superb cross across the box.
Zullo told Fox Sports there are still things to improve in his game but he did enjoy the win a little more than usual.
“Individual performances are one thing but it’s always good to come to your former club and get the three points.
“And at the end of the day we got the last laugh,” he added when asked about copping a falcon from Manny Muscat.
Sydney FC are now back on top of the ladder.
Next week the Sky Blues face Graham Arnold’s former club Central Coast Mariners.
