Adelaide United FC has appointed former Socceroo Sergio Melta as an assistant coach for the rest of the A-League season.
Melta, a three time NSL winner who holds a UEFA European ‘A’ Coaching Licence, committed to take on the role after meeting with the Reds’ football department and interim Head Coach Michael Valkanis.
Melta began his coaching career as an assistant at the South Australian Sports Institute in 1995 and has most recently been in charge of South Australian Super League club Birkalla.
A highly credible name in South Australian football having played over 445 NSL games, Adelaide United football director Michael Petrillo believes Melta will bring a wealth of playing and coaching experience.
“We’ve had some very good discussions with him and believe he can assist Michael Valkanis prepare the team for the remainder of the A-League season for what is a very important time,” Petrillo said.
“It is impossible in this day and age for any head coach not to have an assistant and we’re confident Serge will provide the right assistance to the coaching group.”
Melta attended his first training session with the Reds on Tuesday at Santos Stadium.
