‘Never going to be an easy decision’: Former Socceroo Oar announces retirement

Former Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners and foundation Macarthur FC player Tommy Oar has announced his retirement from professional football, calling time on his career with 28 Socceroos caps to his name.

Oar began his career at the formerly-named Queensland Roar, making his Isuzu UTE A-League debut in December, 2008 before departing for Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht in 2010.

The 30-year-old would go on to play for Ipswich Town in England and Cypriot side APOEL FC in between a return to the Roar, before signing for the Mariners on a two-year contract in late 2018.

Oar would then become Macarthur’s inaugural signing ahead of the club’s maiden Isuzu UTE A-League campaign in 2020-21; at the conclusion of his two-season contract, Oar – who was part of Australia’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad and the triumphant 2015 AFC Asian Cup team – has opted to end his professional career to pursue his off-field ambitions.
