Qantas Socceroo Lucas Neill missed a penalty as his UAE side Al-Jazira crashed out of the AFC Champions League quarter-finals in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
The game between Al-Jazira and Saudi team Al-Ahli finished 2-2 ain normal time, with each side scoring another goal in extra-time.
With the match in Dubai hanging on penalties, Marcelo Camacho, Abdullah al-Muaiouf and Esmaeel Khamis Zayed all scored for Al-Ahli. Jazria’s first penalty from Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira was saved. Teammate Sultan Jarallah al-Menhali scored his penalty, while Al-Ahli’s Jairo Palomino missed.
Neill then missed his chance to put his side back in the game, and Brazilian Simoes scored to send Al-Ahli into the semis with a 4-2 victory.
Neill expressed his frustration on social media early this morning Australian time, tweeting, “Physically & emotionally wrecked!
“Missed my pen in the shootout and we were knocked out of the ACL. Truly gutted. Well done boys, be proud!”
