Nabbout reveals the positions Melbourne Victory must strengthen

Andrew Nabbout believes there are big gaps to fill at Melbourne Victory, but has backed the club to make a splash in the market before the new Hyundai A-League season begins.

Nabbout – who scored a double on his second Victory debut in Wednesday night’s 3-2 FFA Cup 2019 defeat to Newcastle Jets – is one of two headline signings new coach Marco Kurz has made since taking the reins in Victoria.

The other is fellow Caltex Socceroo and Victory old boy Robbie Kruse, while young midfielder Jay Barnett has also signed on from Brisbane Roar.

Although the returning Australian internationals are set to flank Swedish marquee Ola Toivonen in a formidable-looking front three, Nabbout is wary that the club have a long way to go before finalising their roster for the upcoming Hyundai A-League 2019/20 Season.

The club lost influential midfielders Keisuke Honda and Raul Baena at last season’s end, James Troisi has since departed, while star forward Kosta Barbarouses and Terry Antonis have each been poached by Sydney FC and Suwon Bluewings respectively.

“We need depth all over the pitch at the moment,” Nabbout said on Thursday.

“It’s up to the gaffer now to see where we need players. Obviously, we need a couple of midfielders, that’s no secret.

“They are big shoes to fill, it’s up to the club now to fill those gaps.

“But I feel the performance the young boys put in last night… we were really proud of them, they stood up.”
