Lachlan Scott might still be a teenager but he’s showing he’s got the goods for the Wanderers and is one to watch in the race for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award.
It’s been some journey for the 19-year-old, who starting his footballing career at the Balgownie Rangers in Wollongong and now graduating into the Hyundai A-League.
Scott has certainly earned his chance in professional football.
After playing youth football at Wollongong Wolves, APIA Leichardt and Sydney FC, Scott made the switch to the Red and Black side of Sydney in 2016.
He finished as the club’s equal top goal scorer in the 2015/16 Foxtel National Youth League, scored 15 goals in 13 PS4 NSW NPL 2 appearances and was awarded Wanderers NYL Player of the Year.
It earned him a professional contract from coach Tony Popovic, with his first start coming in the round of 32 Westfield FFA Cup clash against Wellington Phoenix.
And what a spectacular debut it turned out to be at a wet and windy Campbelltown Stadium.
The Wanderers fell behind 2-0 before Scott sparked a comeback, scoring the next two goals as the Wanderers surged back to win 3-2.
It was a clear demonstration of his goal-scoring talent and why Popovic has had faith to throw him into the Hyundai A-League in the 2016/17 Season.
Scott has made five appearances so far this campaign, at times keeping Brendon Santalab and Kerem Bulut out of the team.
While he hasn’t got on the scoresheet yet, he was instrumental in the side’s stoppage-time equaliser against Melbourne City, forcing Neil Kilkenny to score an own goal.
If Scott keeps performing the way he has over the last 12 months, it won’t be long until he gets that first Hyundai A-League goal. And that’s why he’s one to watch in this season’s NAB Young Footballer of the Year award.
