You have to pick players in their positions and that has been my emphasis when it comes to picking my All Stars team.
Choosing an All Star team is never easy – do you pick the best eleven players and then fit a formation around them? or do you go for your preferred formation and then pick the best players to fit?
There is no right or wrong answer, but I prefer to pick a team that in my opinion has players playing in their best positions. No-one will agree 100 per cent with anyone elses- team with so many quality players to choose from, but I-m pretty confident that my team would be the envy of the A-League if it was possible to put it together!
GK Ante Covic: He has been outstanding this season, as well as being a great communicator. Commands well behind his defence and very consistent all season.
RB Ivan Franjic: Comfortable on the ball, overlaps well. Adds just as much to the attacking play as well as his defensive game.
RCB Trent Sainsbury: A quality player, very good on the ball. Has a good football brain has been great at Mariners in breakout season after Alex Wilkinson-s departure.
LCB Patrick Zwaanswijk: I always like to have an experienced defender leading from the back who can organise, read the game well and be good on the ball. Patrick is my man and proves that age does not need to be a barrier.
LB Adama Traore: Much like Franjic, Traore is aggressive defensively with lots of pace and won-t lose his shape next to Zwaanswijk on the left side of defence.
CM Aaron Mooy: Aggressive in defence with a great football brain. A great passer of the ball, I love this player to bits and think his best position is a deeper one.
CM Marcelo Carrusca: Absolute quality on the ball. He-s creative and sets up goals as well as scoring them. Reads the game very well and understands his defensive duties. A quality all-round midfielder.
AM Dario Vidosic: A real match-winner who is great one-on-one. And a great link-up player who can be unstoppable with his runs into the penalty area he creates and scores goals. With Mooy and Carrusca in a midfield trio, they would offer so much together.
RW Marco Rojas: A great season under Ange Postecoglou. Fantastic in one-on-one situations, and has the vision to get in behind the defensive line. Has excelled under Ange’s coaching, creates and scores goals. Just outstanding and always a threat.
CF Jeremy Brockie: Outstanding season in a team that has struggled for long parts of this year. Quick and powerful he holds the ball up well and brings players into the game. He also creates and scores the spectacular goals as well as the easy ones. Another match-winner in great form.
LW Archie Thompson: Much the same as Rojas, but with a lot more experience. Another player who always poses a threat, a quality player that is always dangerous.
Bench
GK Eugene Galekovic: Has been outstanding again this season and very unlucky not to start but Covic has been a touch more consistent throughout this season.
DF Nikolai Topor-Stanley: He has been brilliant for Western Sydney, and just misses out on start because of Zwaanswijk. Versatile and very strong in the air.
FW Alessandro Del Piero: It breaks my heart to put my idol on the bench, but I feel if he comes on fresh when the opposition start to fatigue he can change the game easier. A true legend of the game.
FW Daniel McBreen: I have to put a player in that is scoring goals as he is. A great season to date, enjoying an Indian summer to his career. Great to see!
