Melbourne Victory Westfield W-League coach Mike Mulvey’s outstanding efforts this season have been rewarded with his appointment today as senior coach of Brisbane Roar in the Hyundai A-League, commencing immediately.

Mulvey took over his current position from Vicki Linton just prior to the season commencing and has managed to help the squad reach new heights in the league, with the team facing the very real possibility of a first place finish in the W-League for the first time in its history.

“Leaving the Melbourne Victory team, particularly at this point in the season, was a very tough decision for me to make because these girls have done everything I have asked and more,” Mulvey said.

“They have a strong sense of self belief which has seen them win consistently over top teams like Sydney and Canberra, demonstrating another step in the steady improvement which has been evident particularly this season.

“I have no doubt they are capable of going all the way this year.”

Victory Captain and Matilda player, Stephanie Catley, agrees.

“We have really enjoyed playing under Mike this year and will miss him for the next month, but the playing group are a fantastic team who play for each other,” she said.

“There is no doubt we are well placed to have a real shot at the title this year.”

Assistant coach Fabrizio Soncin will lead the team for the rest of the season assisted by FFV Technical Director Sean Douglas.

Soncin said he is looking forward to keeping the girls playing top football and finishing off the season strongly.

“It-s fantastic to see Mike-s coaching talents rewarded with this wonderful career opportunity and we all wish him well,” he said.

“Meanwhile, we-ll continue to build on the great work the girls are doing this season – I have every confidence they can go all the way.”

Melbourne Victory Women have three more regular season games to play. The next will be against Western Sydney Wanderers this Saturday, 22 December, at 2pm at Wembley Park in Box Hill.
