GOALKEEPER Glen Moss and Dutch import Paul Beekmans will be Michael Thwaite-s lieutenants for the new season with the pair both named as Gold Coast United-s vice captains today.
Leaders by nature, Moss and Beekmans have been influential in United-s pre-season campaign and will now shoulder additional responsibility for the new season which kicks off this Sunday with a home fixture against Wellington Phoenix.
Head Coach Miron Bleiberg said that while there were several strong candidates for the vice captaincy, Moss and Beekmans have been stand-outs in terms of leadership during the last couple of months.
“I like to have a leadership group so as everyone knows Michael (Thwaite) is captain and he will be accompanied by Glen (Moss) and Paul (Beekmans). I selected these players for their status in the squad and their ability both on and off the field,” said the United Head Coach.
“They all have good personalities, good characters and they are winners. To be captain or vice captain of any football team is an honour and I know they will live up to the responsibility,” he added.
Also recognised among the younger generation of players were Jerrad Tyson and James Brown, who have been appointed to the leadership group to prime them for future responsibilities.
New Zealand international Moss backed the move, saying the concept will work well, especially as United have a large number of young players on their roster this term.
“I think it-s a good idea to have some younger players in the leadership group.”
