Melbourne City marquee man Aaron Mooy has said playing at Melbourne City has made him enjoy football again, not only flourishing as one of the country’s best footballers but laying his claim to a regular position in the Socceroos squad.
Mooy, who is currently in camp with the national team in England’s north preparing for this weekend’s clash against ‘The Old Enemy’, believed his creative role at City has allowed him to express himself out on the field.
“Since I’ve moved to Melbourne City, I’ve played higher up (the pitch) and they’ve given me the freedom to get forward and try and create chances,” Mooy told Goal Australia.
With the marquee man likely to start in the Socceroos friendlies against England and Greece, Mooy was more than happy to compete for his position, believing the national team is in a unique situation at the moment.
“I’m not comfortable because there are so many good players,” he said.
“It can easily change so I don’t think you can be comfortable in the national team but I’ve been very happy I’ve been playing the last few games, the qualifiers.
“They’re important matches and it gives me a lot of confidence.”
With the likes of young guns Massimo Luongo and Tomi Rogic likely to partner Mooy in the engine room of Ange Postecoglou’s side, the A-League’s assist machine is relishing the opportunity to be the senior statesman in the midfield.
“They’re both excellent players. They’re very technical and they’re smart as well,” he said.
“So when you’re playing with players like that, it makes it easier. They’re clever with their movement and they’re always looking to play, so it’s very enjoyable to play with Tommy and Mass.”
The Socceroos take on England on Saturday 28 May at 4.45am AEST with the match live on Fox Sports.
