Monday Night Football preview: A-League – April 5

Western United will have a close eye on the A-League’s top six when they travel to face the Newcastle Jets on Easter Monday, while Melbourne City aim to bounce back on the road against the Wellington Phoenix.

Mark Rudan’s eighth-placed Green and Black claimed their ever points against Victorian rivals City with a 2-1 triumph last week and can tighten the gap in the race for finals football when they visit the Hunter at 5.05pm AEST.

Craig Dean’s Jets lie second from bottom on the ladder, desperately battling to escape a losing streak that extended to five matches following their 2-1 loss against Perth Glory last Saturday.

Following the contest at McDonald Jones Stadium, City will try to pick themselves back up after the reverse against Western United halted a club-record six-game winning streak and put a dent in their efforts to catch up with the A-League frontrunners.

Despite the loss last time out, Patrick Kisnorbo’s side can climb up to second with a three-point haul at WIN Stadium in Wollongong and sit within touching distance of the table-topping Central Coast Mariners.

Ufuk Talay’s Phoenix will look to be the thorn in City’s side in the 7.10pm AEST kick-off as the New Zealand outfit aim to recover from their 1-0 home loss to Macarthur FC a week ago and launch their own bid to gatecrash the competition’s top six.
